The National Education Health and Allied Workers Union said it has noted the comments around the National Health Insurance coming out of the Board of Healthcare Funders Conference held last week.

Nehawu’s Spokesperson Sizwe Pamla they are calling on the Department of Health to clarify how the principle of a single payer can be adhered to in an environment where medical schemes continue to operate.

Pamla said that as Nehawu they want to warn them and they hope that their new found optimism comes as a result of them having embraced the idea of universal health care.

“Not because they are looking at ways in which to hijack it or to water it down in order to benefit from it,” added Pamla.

He also added that they are aware in 2011 some of them came up with new proposals on how to go about funding the NHI.

Pamla said that however as a union they don’t want an NHI that will be a multi payer system; they want a single payer system that will be administered by the state.
