The Western Cape Department of Education said it is horrified at the incident whereby a Grade 11 pupil was found in a school toilet with her hands tied and her mouth gagged in Maitland.

It is still not clear of how the incident happened but police are investigating.

WCED Spokesperson Paddy Attwell said that is a horrific incident, the school reported the incident to the police immediately and the department.

“The department has arranged counselling and physiological support to the victim, those who found her and her friends,” added Attwell.

Attwell said that the district staff and school staff have debriefed all the learners of the school about the incident at a special assembly and the police are currently investigating the incident.
