Early Tuesday morning two armed men held a 29-year-old man at gun point, robbing him of his grey Isuzu bakkie. The victim is believed to have been waiting for an employee in Mew Way near the N2-highway in Khayelitsha when the incident occurred.

Inspector Bernadine Steyn says the two suspects fled in the man’s vehicle on the highway in the direction of Cape Town.

The police’s flying squad busy with routine patrols were then stopped by the victim who was able to point them in the direction of his hijacked vehicle.

“The police members gave chase and instructed the suspects to pull over. They instead fired shots at the police who returned fire – forcing the suspects to stop on the road reserve near the R300 bridge,” says Steyn.

She says the men then ran towards a residential area next to the N2 highway while there was continues cross fire shooting between the suspects and the police.

“One of the suspects who sustained a bullet wound to his left upper leg was apprehended and arrested by police. The 27-year-old male who resides in Site C was taken to a nearby hospital where he is currently under police guard,” says Steyn.

A firearm with a filed off serial number was found in the possession of the hospitalised suspects and was seized.

“The other suspect fled between the nearby houses and is currently still at large. A case docket of vehicle hijacking and attempted murder is being investigated,” adds Steyn.
