Trade union Solidarity has decided that they will go on with their legal process of getting disclosure of the information of Eskom’s application for higher tariffs. This comes after Eskom requested the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) not to disclose certain “sensitive information” in the report.

“Nersa today (Tuesday) published the approved sections of the report on its website. Solidarity maintains that full disclosure of the report is in the public interest,” says Kleynhans.

He adds that given the circumstances in which Eskom finds itself, it’s in the interest of every electricity consumer to be fully informed of the planned tariff hike.

Eskom's has defended this and have been quoted saying a bid to have parts of its 53% tariff increase application withheld from the public is to protect its position in "hard-core" coal sales deals.
”The public should also be entitled to know what information has been withheld and for what reason,” says Kleynhans.

Manager of Demand Side Management at Eskom, Andrew Etzinger says that without this stand, the company might have to pay more for coal, pushing the price of electricity up even more.
