NUM to challenge retrenchments by Angloplatinum

Lusanda Bill
21 August 2013

The National Union of Mineworkers has strongly condemned the possible blackmail unleashed by mining companies led by Angloplatinum in announcing massive retrenchments.

Angloplatinum this week announced that it will be retrenching 6 900 workers, which is different to the 3 000 which was proposed during the consultation process.

NUM Spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said the fact that companies including Sibanye Gold, Goldfields and Harmony Gold are retrenching is an attempt to blackmail the unions, in terms of the corrective bargaining.

Seshoka said they will fight and challenge the matter to insure that collective bargaining remains and that there are no retrenchments.
