The Congress of South African Trade Union is demanding that government should fund Marikana victims’ legal costs.

Cosatu Spokesperson Patrick Craven said workers and their families who were at the heart of the events being investigated, but lack the money to pay legal fees, should not be unfairly discriminated against.

Craven added that justice must be a right and not a privilege.

He said that the government themselves launched the inquiry, they are paying the legal costs of all government or state employees like the SAPS.

“And it’s only natural justice that all those that are implicated in the disaster should have equal access to the commission,” added Craven

He also said that it serious danger that if that is not the case and then final report will be seen as barest in favour of those who did have the money for the legal cost.
