Minister in the Presidency for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation Collins Chabane has been appointed by President Jacob Zuma to address the challenges at Walter Sisulu University.
President Zuma assigned Minister Chabane after receiving a letter calling for him to intervene by the South African Council of Churches in the Eastern Cape.
Presidency’s Harold Maloka said the Minister has an objective of ensuring that the culture of learning is restored at the university and that he immediately put together task team directors’ generals led by the Director General in the Presidency so that they can put together a report after the consultations.
This comes students were ordered to leave the institution premises last Friday following protests at the university that have been going on for two months.
Maloka added that what is of importance at the moment is to ensure that workers are back at work.
