Lead poisoning in remote parts of Nigeria has claimed the lives of 163 people.
A Health Ministry spokesperson said the poisoning is caused by illegal gold mining.
Of the 355 cases reported in the northern Zamfara state, 111 of the casualties were children.
Nigeria has since asked for the assistance of international agencies.
