A Metro police officer in Cape Town has been charged with raping his 23-year-old girlfriend.

It is alleged that the victim and the suspect went clubbing on Monday night, had a few drinks and then returned to the suspect’s home in Mitchell’s Plain in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorates national spokesperson Moses Dlamini said that the victim said the suspect hit her over the head until she fainted.

When the victim woke up, she realised the suspect was raping her.

Dlamini said the victim escaped and got help from the suspect’s brother.

He added that the victim then called the police.

Dlamini added that the Metro police officer handed himself over police and a case of rape and common assault was opened.

The suspect appeared in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrates Court yesterday and was granted bail.
