Several rural towns across the country have been warned not to drink untreated tap water.
The department of water affairs said that residents have been warned not to drink the water.
The water can only be consumed if it is disinfected by either boiling it or adding bleach to it.
Only seven provinces have been affected by the infected water and they include the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West and the Northern Cape.
The department warned that the water could be infected with harmful diseases.
