Acting President Jeff Radebe has expressed his shock and sadness at the horrific accident which happened on Thursday night in Pinetown, which left 22 people dead.

The accident also left 17 people injured.

Radebe said he has briefed President Jacob Zuma who is currently attending the G20 Leaders' Summit in Russia.

Presidency Spokesperson Mac Maharaj said this is a third collision claiming many lives in only a few days, following the death of nine people including seven young girls returning from the annual reed dance ceremony in KwaZulu-Natal over the weekend and the death of seven people on the N2 between Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape.

Mahraj added that the loss of such a high number of people, some of them breadwinners is painful and has affected so many households negatively. We urge road users especially drivers to exercise caution on the roads especially when carrying passengers.

Meanwhile KwaZulu Natal Police have confirmed that the truck driver who was involved in the horrific accident that killed 22 people in Pinetown has been arrested.

It is believed that the truck crushed into five vehicles leaving 22 dead and 17 injured.

The truck's brakes are suspected to have failed.

Police Spokesperson Vincent Mdunge said they have to formally charge the driver for culpable homicide as well as reckless and negligent driving.
