City to implement safety measures to curb crime on Signal Hill

The City of Cape Town is proposing to implement safer measures to curb crime and control access to Signal Hill and Tafelberg roads.

Several cases of rape and robbery have taken place on the mountain this year.

Ward Councillor Dave Bryant said metro police will guard the roads between 22:00 and 5am.

Bryant explains that they need to find creative ways to look after the public and ensure that their safety is taken care of during those times.

“The controlled access will not prevent anybody from entering or exiting those roads but it would ensure that there is notice taken of the vehicles that are entering and exiting,” added Bryant.

He also said that this will be done in case of any potential crime that has taken place at the top or if there is a suspicious vehicle in the area which may be entering.

Meanwhile Founder of Table Mountain Watch Group Andre van Schalkwyk said they welcome any initiative by the City of Cape Town that will ensure the safety of people on the mountain.

Van Schalkwyk said that they believe that anything that is done in an area is a good thing to secure it.

“But obviously we would like to see what the proposal is and we are hoping that it is a collaborative process in terms of what they had proposed to do,” Van Schalkwyk added.
