The crane Barge went stranded in storms many years ago between Llandudno and Hout Bay.

“The NSRI launched rescue boats around the crane barge which went aground years ago. It appears they (employees) wanted to get off because they are apparently disgruntled with their working conditions,” says NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

It is believed Phillippe Mlungwana had to be rescued was employed to strip the crane barge. “The man wished to leave the vessel but was stuck on the wreck because he can’t swim,” explains Lambinon.

Earlier that same day Eric Tontsi who also works at the crane barge, swam ashore and went to the police requesting assistance to get Mlungwana who can’t swim off the wreck.

“The police dispatched a three man police team to investigate from the land side before calling in the NSRI’s assistance,” says Lambinon.

He adds that the man was rescued and no lives were in danger.
