Five people were seriously injured when two bakkies crashed on Symphony Way near Lansdowne Road in Philippi earlier today.

ER24 paramedic, Tristan Wadeley says on arrival the fire department's medical crews had already initiated treatment on some of the patients.

“One patient had a suspected head injury and another sustained a confirmed spinal injury. It is believed that some of the patients were ejected from the bakkie.”

The two seriously injured patients and two patients with minor injuries were taken to Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital and the other remaining patient was taken to a local provincial day hospital, says Wadeley.

One of the bakkies was carrying paint which ended up spilling over some of the patients, he said.

“The exact cause of the accident could not be established by paramedics on the scene. Metro police and SAPS were also in attendance,” said Wadely
