What was initially thought to have been a hostage drama in the central business district has turned out to be an unsuccessful jewellery store robbery, Cape Town police said.
It was reported earlier that a hostage drama was underway in central Cape Town.
City officials closed off a building in St George's Mall surrounding the area.
Police spokesperson AndrĂ© Traut said,” The suspect fled through a fire escape. He fired a single shot and no-one were injured.
He said,”the suspect left empty handed because he couldn’t open the safe.
