A 16-year-old boy from Tygerberg was allegedly raped in March on a school rugby tour.
The Edgemead High learner had his eyebrows shaved by other learners, who then raped him after he went to sleep.
The Western Cape Education Head of Communication Paddy Attwell said the department views the reported incident in a very serious light.
Attwell said this kind of behaviour is completely unacceptable.
Initiation is illegal in terms of the South African Schools Act.
Attwell added that they understand that the school took disciplinary action and suspended certain learners.
He added that since the department has heard about the incident, district officials are investigating.
