More vigilance on World Press Freedom Day

As the world commemorates World Press Freedom Day, it’s also a day to assess the state of media freedom.

The South African National Editors’ Forum’s Nic Dawes says what needs to be commemorated is the role the media plays around the world in sustaining democracy.

Dawes added that World Press Freedom Day is also an occasion to be vigilant and be aware of threats to press freedom.

The South African media is under threat regarding the controversial protection of state information bill.
