One person died after an ambulance collided with a taxi between Kroonstad and Viljoenskroon in the Free State.
Several other people were seriously injured.
Paramedics said that the taxi was trying to make way for the ambulance to pass when the two vehicles crashed into each other and then the taxi overturned.
Netcare 911’s Jeff Wicks said one passenger in the taxi died.
He added that at least 17 other people were stabilised on the scene before being taken to hospital.
