YOUTH MARCH THIS SATURDAY

"Come join us as we march away from violence"

This coming Saturday (5 April 2008) marks the culmination celebration of a project which started in June 2007, when two Bush Radio facilitators attended training at Public Achievement in Northern Ireland, covering the topic “Youth Away from Violence” and The Civic Youth Work Models for Project Development.

They used the civic youth work model that provides a clear system in project design and implementation in dealing with youth at risk. These Bush Radio facilitators then trained over 50 young people from various schools and youth organisations in Cape Town in this model. In turn, these youth organisations implemented projects dealing with “youth away from violence” on the Cape Flats. As a result, Bush Radio as well as various schools and community organisations have been implementing projects under the banner of “Youth away from Violence” for the past year.

These projects include: raising awareness on bullying at schools, racism at schools, the safety of children and discussing sexual discrimination as a form of violence, rape, freedom of choice, gangsterism, issues of neglect, among many other issues specifically identified by young people, as forms of violence in our country.

To celebrate the successful implementation of these projects, a procession is organised through Gugulethu (one of the areas where the project was implemented), in order to celebrate the achievements of these individual projects and to raise awareness around violence and youth at risk. Come join us and hear from the youth how this project has helped them cope with violence in their societies.

When: Saturday, 5th April from 10AM – 2PM
Where: Broadcast venue – Siyazingisa Primary School in NY 132, Gugulethu
Route: Everyone will disembark from transport at Siyazingisa public school in NY 132 from about 09:30. At about 10AM we will leave the school and march down NY 132 left into NY 113, left into NY 111 Street until NY 1 where we will stop at Gugulethu 7 Memorial.
From there we will march to the Amy Biehl Memorial in NY 1 opposite the BP garage where we will stop as well, and then back down NY 1 until NY 132 to the school.

At the school, we will have activities, such as games for children, performances of local artists, a soccer tournament as well as the CREW broadcasting live from 10AM–1PM.

While the march continues, a group of Bush Radio’s child broadcasters will broadcast live from Gugulethu. After the procession, fun and entertainment will be provided by some of the young people who were involved in implementing the projects directly, as well as Come and Play and the Department of Community Safety.
