According to the City of Cape Town’s pilot air pollution study that was conducted in Khayelitsha, the air quality in the area often falls below safety levels with pollution on average being 70% more than it is in the city centre.

“This is a pilot project to improve air quality in informal areas and it involved a detailed survey of households, business, a traffic survey and other sources of air pollution in the area,” says Cape Town Health Portfolio Committee Chairperson James Vos.

He adds that the outputs of this survey will also lead to the development of appropriate air quality forecasting and planning tools.
