The National Sea Rescue Institute has issued an urgent warning to thousands of holidaymakers to take particular care when bathing or launching any craft to go to sea this weekend.
Spokesperson Craig Lambinon says the prevailing full moon spring tide has brought stronger than normal rip-currents along the coastline.
An unidentified man, believed to be about 35 years old, was reported to have gone missing in the sea yesterday afternoon at Melkbaai in the Strand and an extensive search by NSRI Gordon's Bay, the Metro Red Cross AMS helicopter, Metro Ambulance and Rescue Services and the SA Police Services has failed to find any sign of the missing man.
The Police Dive Unit has been activated to assist in the search today.
Lambinon also appealed to anyone going to sea or on lagoons in boats to take the necessary precautions like wearing life jackets.
A man and three children were rescued in the Swartvlei lagoon at Sedgefield when their craft ran aground on a sandbank.
None of them were wearing life jackets and there was no means of communication or emergency flares onboard the small craft.
The children had to be treated for hypothermia after being rescued.
