City police have successfully completed a foreign language course in three languages in a bid to better assist the hordes of tourists and foreign soccer fans who have descended on local shores for the World Cup.
59 officers in the City’s Safety and Security Directorate were trained in conversational Spanish, German and Portuguese over six weeks.
“With the influx of foreign football fans and tourists to Cape Town during the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup, it has become imperative that our members are able to overcome the language barrier.
“Foreign visitors need prompt assistance in a language they understand and are familiar with, whether it be to direct them somewhere or to provide them with information,” said Metro Police Deputy Chief Yolanda Faro.
The trained members will be stationed at the Cape Town Stadium, the FIFA Fan Fest and the four fan jols.
Faro concluded that the additional training will enrich the Directorate’s skills base and will be advantageous when the World Cup draws to a close.
