Eight of Makhaza residents appeared in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court today and 16 are due in court soon for public violence.
24 people were arrested following today’s disruption over municipality’s removal of controversial toilets in the area.
Residents burnt tires and blocked roads during the protest.
Last week members of the African National Congress Youth League destroyed toilet enclosures, prompting the municipality to remove toilets completely until residents in the area erect their own enclosures.
Police say the situation is tense but calm.
