A 24 year old male has been arrested for attempting to defeat the ends of justice after he allegedly phoned his insurance company saying he was hijacked in Maitland.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Siyabulela Vukubi says the suspect informed the tracking company that two unknown males held him at gunpoint and forced him out of his vehicle.

“The tracking company then activated the tracker in order to trace the client’s vehicle. The complaint was also dispatched to the SAPS K9 Unit to search for the vehicle and the tracker signal was then picked up and followed to where the vehicle was parked in Product Street, Maitland.

“The police members contacted the tracking company to inform them that the vehicle was found. After a while the tracking company contacted the SAPS members and informed them that the client phoned back expressing his appreciation and the quick response of the SAPS, he informed them to cancel the complaint,” said Vukubi.

Vukubi says it emerge that the complainant was in fact not hi-jacked but was merely testing the response of the SAPS and the tracking company.

“The owner of the vehicle then later came to the vehicle and he was subsequently arrested for attempting to defeat the ends of justice,” said Vukubi.

He will appear in Cape Town Magistrates Court tomorrow for attempting to defeat the ends of justice.
