Residents of Bloubergstrand in Cape Town fear that the Seli One, which has been stranded off the Table View beach since September, may explode.
Loud bangs have been heard from the wreck. The ship has been abandoned by its owners.
It caught fire after an accident while salvors were cutting it up this afternoon, but no one was apparently injured. People have been evacuated from the ship and from the nearby beach.
The Seli One is lying near luxury accommodation, restaurants and a hotel. It has coal and heavy oil on board, as well as gas canisters.
Experts say it may be better to leave the wreck to burn out, as only less dangerous ash will then pollute the environment.
