Marine Coastal Management Official arrest for corruption

A 34 year old Marine Coastal Management Official has been arrest on corruption charges in Gansbaai.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Christian Le Roux says it is alleged that the official took 14 bags of abalone from a group of men on the 26th of April 2010 at about 04h00.

“He used a state vehicle to transport the abalone and only handed in two of the bags at the Gansbaai Police station. He allegedly sold the other twelve bags of abalone for a R57 000-cash.

“One of the men from whom the abalone was taken had laid a charge of assault against the him. Through investigation it was establish that official handed R40 000 back to the complainant’s friend in an attempt get the assault case withdrawn against him,” said Le Roux.

The suspect also agree to give back the other R17 000.00 on the 3rd of May 2010 but it didn’t happen.

The suspect will appear in the Gansbaai Magistrates Court on Monday.
