Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande has urged the South African media to be tougher on government, when reviewing its service delivery.
Speaking at the Telkom Classic Business Journalist of the Year Awards ceremony, Nzimande said media organisations that are locally based should not be mouthpieces for government structures.
He said government officials must not only hear what they are doing right but need to know when they are falling short.
The Communist Party leader said he however knows that sensational scandal sells papers but he called on the country’s journalists to live up to their function as a responsible watchdog body.
“If truths are uncomfortable, so be it. But together let us have a more rigorous debate,” said Nzimande.
