Unions defend Vavi against ANC disciplinary charges

The South African Democratic Teachers Union is the latest union to throw its weight behind COSATU secretary-general Zwelinzima Vavi amid allegations that ANC is to lay disciplinary charges against him.

The teacher union says the decision by the ruling party is another attempt to silence Cosatu in its campaign against corruption.

Vavi specifically cited corruption allegations against ministers of Communications Siphiwe Nyanda and Co-operative Governance Sicelo Shiceka as evidence that the Zuma administration was slow at acting against corruption.

The union argues that Vavi’s comments were not said in his personal capacity but on behalf of Cosatu after a Central Executive Committee meeting.

“The comments represented the views of millions of Cosatu members and their affiliates,” Sadtu says in a statement.

The union says it remains in full support of Vavi and Cosatu whom they believe are facing the onslaught due their stance against corruption.

Transport union Satawu yesterday appealed to the ANC to drop the charges and urged Vavi not appear before any disciplinary hearing because he was only answerable to the federation’s two million workers.
