South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress has paid tribute to the youth of the country ahead of the 34th anniversary of the June 16 student uprisings.
South Africans will again re-live the historic day, which shaped the country’s democracy and highlighted the role young people played in attaining liberation.
The main commemorations will take place at Kuruman in the Northern Cape.
The ANC’s Jackson Mthembu says it is significant that this year’s celebration is marked by the hosting of the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup, with the national squad, made of youthful members playing their second match in the tournament on the symbolic day.
Mthembu says most of the soccer participants are young people who are determined to advance their goals through the sport, but also to advance national reconciliation and unity.
