City of Cape Town concerned by possible increase in Eskom tariffs

The City of Cape Town has expressed its concern regarding Eskom application for a further tariff increase from the National Energy Regulator.

Eskom wants tariffs to go up 25.3 percent from July 1st which is double the expected hike. City of Cape Town’s Executive Deputy Mayor Ian Neilson said the application has come so late in the process for the drafting of budgets by municipalities.

Neilson said they believe that 22 percent or more is unaffordable for people particularly house holders and therefore hopes that this matter can be resolved quickly so that they can prove tariffs for our own consumers at a lower level.
