CoCT ascertaining gas smell

The City of Cape Town is trying to ascertain the cause of a strong smell of gas that has been supposedly lingering in the metro.

In a statement, the City said it had received numerous reports on Monday, in areas such as Bonteheuwel, Manenberg, Mitchell’s Plain and Sea Point, amongst others.

The City's Fire & Rescue Service Spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, said his team was sent out to investigate but could not locate the source of the smell.

"Our call centre phoned several entities – Afrox, Astron, the Airport, the Harbour and the Air Pollution department; however no one reported any gas leaks."

"The situation is being monitored, but at this point, the Fire Service is not able to pinpoint the source of the smell," added Carelse.

He called on anyone with information that could help shed light on the matter to report it to the City's Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700.
