Six lives lost as fire rips through Khayelitsha shack

Six people - three minors and three adults - have died in a shack fire at Town Two in Khayelitsha on Saturday.

City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, said firefighters were alerted of structures alight at approximately 01:20 on the scene several structures were alight and they were informed that one person was missing in the SST Section.

Carelse added that another man was rushed to hospital in a critical condition with third degree burn wounds.

“Crews from Lansdowne, Macassar and Mitchells Plain were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, several structures were burning and crews were informed of more than one person unaccounted for. Three minors and three adults, genders unknown, sustained fatal burn wounds. One adult male was rushed to hospital via ambulance as he received third degree burn wounds and was in a critical condition. A total of five structures were destroyed and the fire was extinguished at approximately 02:30”.

The cause of the fire is unknown and is being investigated.
