Two people have been arrested for being in possession of abalone to the value of R125 000 in the Melkbosstrand area.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says the two with a minor were spotted by SAPS members at Hol Bay carrying two bags.
Van Wyk says when the suspects saw the police members they attempted to flee, but were apprehended and arrested.
“The two bags contained 223 abalone units. A number of other bags containing abalone were found abandoned in the nearby vicinity. A total of 1100 abalone units with an estimate value of R 125 000 were seized by police.
"Earlier in the morning Melkbosstrand spotted a white Toyota Quantum in Melkbosstrand CBD along 6th Avenue, driving from the seaside exiting Melkbosstrand. They then stopped the Toyota Quantum and noticed that the vehicle had 23 males who were wearing wet diving suits,” said van Wyk.
The minor was release in the care of his guardian and he will appear in Atlantis Magistrate Court today. The two adults are detained and will appear in court on tomorrow.
