The Institute for Security Studies has criticised the closure of specialist police units, saying it is having a negative effect on the fight against crime.
The institute’s Johan Burger says the closures have led to a decline in staff morale and the departure of highly trained police members.
Non-governmental organisations who work with police say units such as child protection and sexual offences found that the transfer of members to police stations created confusion and uncertainty.
Burger says in order to reinstate the units, proper planning needs to be done.
