As England’s soccer team touched down at OR Tambo International this morning, Sky News is warning fans to prepare for what it calls an “ear-shattering experience”.
The news channel warns visiting fans from all nations to wear ear plugs to protect themselves from the “deafening drone” of the vuvuzela.
Sky quotes Pretoria professor De Wet Swanepoel as saying the vuvuzela can reach 131 decibels, almost as loud as a gunshot.
Swanepoel’s research found that soccer fans exposed to the noise suffer some hearing loss after just one game.
Meanwhile, details of South Africa’s preparation to host the World Cup will come under Parliament’s scrutiny when the joint ad hoc readiness committee presents its report to a sitting of the two houses today.
The work of the committee involved oversight visits to host cities, all World Cup stadiums, as well as public hearings in Parliament on the matter.
The committee unequivocally concludes in its report that the country is ready to host the tournament.
