Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa today expressed concern at the high number of firearms lost at the hands of police.
This follows recent reports of an incident at the Inanda police station in KwaZulu-Natal.
The Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga have also experienced unacceptably higher percentages of firearm losses.
But Mthethwa says progress is being made to recover the lost firearms, with the help of the new Integrated Ballistics Identification System.
Department spokesperson Zweli Mnisi says the system will determine who used the firearm and when.
