South Africa’s first democratic elected president Nelson Mandela says the World Cup is more than just a game.
In a message read on his behalf by President Jacob Zuma Mandela said the tournament symbolised the power of football that unites people.
The message was read at the Fifa congress and opening banquet in Midrand yesterday evening.
Mandela said football unites people together, regardless of language, skin colour and political or religious persuasion.
Mandela invited delegates to join South Africa in celebrating Africa’s humanity.
In his address, Zuma thanked Fifa for its contribution to the eradication of apartheid, when the body exerted pressure through expelling apartheid South Africa in 1976.
He added that the value of the World Cup event for nation building was immeasurable and priceless.
Zuma says the South African flag has never been so popular in its 16-year history.
