The Sowetan newspaper is being sued by the National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele. Cele is suing the newspaper for defamation.
The newspaper reported on Wednesday that Cele was claiming R200 000 for defamation over a picture on the 6th of July, 2007, of him wearing a trench coat, a hat and carrying a rifle with the headline: “Police must aim for the head”.
The same picture was used in a follow up article on July 16.
Thabo Leshilo, who was the editor at the time the article was published, said the case related to a graphic we used of Cele when he was the province's safety MEC.
