The number of tik addicts seeking treatment has increased from 19 to 36 percent over the past four years in the Western Cape.

The Cape Town Drug Counselling says about 30 to 40 new patients has come forward to get assistance on a monthly basis.

“Tik remained the drug of choice among the youth. Tik has a more negative impact for the community in which tik users live, such as there is an increase in tik psychosis for example,” Centre Director Grant Jardine said.

“The drug use is a fashion and at the moment tik is the drug of choice," he said.
