Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba on Wednesday delivered the department’s budget vote in Parliament, where he spoke about Smart ID cards, security issues and the new visa regulations.

Minister Gigaba said citizenship is our birth-right and deserves our protection and respect.

“Participating in illegal schemes to extend citizenship to people who do not deserve it devalues our hard-won citizenship, undermining our national development, security and social cohesion.

The Department of Home Affairs, in conjunction with the police and other security agencies, will continue to combat identity fraud and identity-related corruption, fighting both fraudsters and colluders alike with the same tenacity.” Gigaba added.

Minister Gigaba also highlighted the fact that an alarming number of Identity Documents are reissued every year, due to loss or theft and this increases identity theft and also inviting fraud and corruption.

He added that one of the Departments top priorities is to get every citizens registered and to clean up the National Population Register.

“Register the birth of all children before you leave the hospital or within 30 days of their birth, in order to ensure your child’s identity and status is recognised and safe guarded and to help us secure our National Population Register.” Gigaba said.
