As President Jacob Zuma launched Operation Phakisa over the weekend, the Western Cape government has committed its support of the programme.  Operation Phakisa plans to create one million jobs in key maritime sectors.

Western Cape MEC of Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde, said marine economic development depends on well-functioning harbours.

He added that the province’s twelve small fishing harbours can play a crucial role in supporting fishing communities and providing them with access to other economic opportunities.

Through ministerial spokesperson Bronwynne Jooste, MEC Winde confirmed the province’s support of Operation Phakisa:

“The Western Cape is in full support of President Jacob Zuma’s Operation Phakisa. We are working with them, agriculture and other IDZ sectors.”

MEC Winde reiterated that through co-operation, his department could stimulate growth and jobs of the oceans economy.
