A former police
constable has been sentenced to five years behind bars for fraud and defeating
the ends of justice
Ashley Munnik
heard his fate in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Court yesterday.
He was arrested
early last year following a lengthy investigation.
The former South
African Police Service member was stationed at the Athlone Police Station where
he worked as a detective.
In 2014, he was
accused of corruption, following an investigation that found he had kept
several packets of tik instead of handing them over as evidence.
Munnik was
convicted on ten counts of defeating the ends of justice and one count of
fraud.
He has been
sentenced to five years for each count, which will run concurrently.
