Lusanda Bill
15 October 2010
Bail has been granted to the two Tshwane Metro Police officers linked to the disappearance of Leon Chimuta.
Phuta Maphete and Steven Ndau have been granted bail of R1 000 each at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.
Leon Chimuta and five other Zimbabweans, including his brother James, were allegedly assaulted and dropped off separately on the outskirts of Pretoria a month ago and they have not been seen since.
The two police officers were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting and kidnapping Chimuta.
The state suggested the pair be released on R3,000 bail each, but their lawyers argued the amount was too high and suggested it be set at R1,000 instead.
The case has now been postponed until December.
