Lusanda Bill
17 October 2010
An agreement has been reached between a meeting with government and the South African National Editors’ Forum in Magaliesburg this weekend.
SANEF and government have agreed that improved relations between government and the media are critical within a democratic South Africa.
The two parties also agreed that the Constitution should remain the main reference point for the role of the media, as well as the mandate of government.
Motlanthe said the current review of the media’s self-regulatory system, the press ombudsman could influence whether there is a need for a media appeals tribunal.
The meeting has been hailed as a success, and both parties have vowed to continue meeting in order to improve relationship between government and the media.
