Over the past five months, mine deaths has climbed to 48 as a result of mine accidents.
Trade union Solidarity said this could be because of a 29% increase in deaths on platinum mines.
Solidarity’s occupational health spokesperson Leigh McMaster said the platinum sector is having difficulty at this stage, not only with fatalities but also with a number of other issues.
He added that the other issues include productivity and the looming retrenchments in the industry.
McMaster said the fatalities have exaggerated the problem that the industry is facing.
