The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed the decision by the Khayelitsha Regional Court, not to grant leave to appeal to the four people accused of killing Zoliswa Nkonyana.
The NPA’s Eric Ntabazalila said it sends a strong message that the state will not condone hate crimes.
Ntabazalila said they strongly believe that any other court that looked at the matter would not have come to a different conclusion by the court in Khayelitsha.
He added they were satisfied that the four were denied the leave to appeal.
Ntabazalila said he hopes it serves as a warning to all people who are involved in hate crimes, that as the NPA and the state, they will argue for a strong sentence.
