The third round of wage negotiations in the
clothing industry reached a deadlock on Wednesday.
The Southern African Clothing and Textiles
Workers Union General Secretary Andre Kriel today said there is a possibility
that 60 000 clothing workers nationally could embark on a strike.
Wage negotiations started on the 18 of
April 2012 until the 20th
of June 2012 .
Kriel empathised that clothing workers are
the lowest paid workers in the whole of the manufacturing industry in South Africa .
The way forward now is that SACTWU has
referred the matter to the clothing industry bargaining council. The bargaining council has 30 days to set up
a Conciliation meeting. From there if
the Conciliation meeting fails then SACTWU will conduct a secret ballot among
its members for a strike action.
Andre Kriel said “Strike action is not our
first choice. But we cannot accept
further cuts in the already low wages of clothing industry workers”.
