A possible strike in the clothing industry

The third round of wage negotiations in the clothing industry reached a deadlock on Wednesday.

The Southern African Clothing and Textiles Workers Union General Secretary Andre Kriel today said there is a possibility that 60 000 clothing workers nationally could embark on a strike.

Wage negotiations started on the 18 of April 2012 until the 20th of June 2012.

Kriel empathised that clothing workers are the lowest paid workers in the whole of the manufacturing industry in South Africa.

The way forward now is that SACTWU has referred the matter to the clothing industry bargaining council.  The bargaining council has 30 days to set up a Conciliation meeting.  From there if the Conciliation meeting fails then SACTWU will conduct a secret ballot among its members for a strike action.

Andre Kriel said “Strike action is not our first choice.  But we cannot accept further cuts in the already low wages of clothing industry workers”.
