Hopeful Khayelitsha Residents as Minister of Water and Sanitation Sort out Sewerage problems

Khayelitsha residents remain hopeful as Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu's visit to the community will help end sewerage problems that have been happening in the community for the past few months.

Mchunu visited Site C and other areas after receiving a complaint from a resident about blocked drains and sewage flowing from the street into their yard.

The minister has agreed to meet with the City of Cape Town to resolve the sanitation struggles in the community. A resident in Vukani Street said she has been struggling with sewage flowing from a drain since 2018. She also highlighted that once a grain is blocked the sewerage starts coming to her house that she hopes the minister will be able to sort out.

The City of Cape Town said more than 4,700 sewer blockages and overflows had been cleared in the Khayelitsha area since January.

Officials said a number of upgrades to the sewage system in the community were on the cards.
