A 9-year-old girl has died in the Masiphumelele informal settlement in Cape Town.

A wall collapsed on four informal structures while the people inside the shacks were asleep. The young girl was trapped under the wall that collapsed.

Disaster risk management spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes says a preliminary investigation conducted by a city building inspector, has revealed that the owner of the small holding had erected the wall in an incorrect manner.

It is also believed that a gale force wind contributed to the accident.
