The South African Democratic Teachers Union in the Eastern Cape says the province’s education system is on the verge of collapsing.

According to Sadtu, thousands of learners are unable to get to schools due to the suspension of scholar transport.

The school nutrition programme which is the only source of a meal for many learners has been suspended.

Temporary teachers’ contracts have not been renewed and more than a thousand schools have not received learner materials due to alleged fraud in the tendering processes.

The union has called for drastic intervention.
